The arms show the so-called Türkentor ("Turks gate" ), one of 60 still existing parts of the ancient city wall (photo source). The fortifications were built between 1630 and 1634, after the town was destroyed by the Turks four times during the 16th and 17th century. The town's economic strength lay in wine-growing.
