Description of the flag

Based on photographs of the 2015 and 2016 annual conferences of the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo), it appears that Greene County has changed the design of its flag. The design still features the county seal displayed on a white field, but with a dark green border around the flag. Also, the seal is no longer bright green with black lettering and symbols. The central horseshoe is now gold, the lettering and symbols on the seal are now dark green, and the bright green background of the circular seal has been made white. The resulting design is quite striking and a marked contrast to the previous design. This current design has been in use since at least 2015, based on the VACo photographs.

Previous flag

The official county flag is similar to that of neighboring Madison County. The flag of Greene County is white with the county seal centered on the flag. The county seal is green and features a black horseshoe at the center. Above the horseshoe is the name "SPOTSWOOD," with "GOLDEN HORSESHOE" written beneath the symbol and the year "1716" at the center. This is to commemorate colonial governor Spotswood whose knights of the Golden Horseshoe originally surveyed what is now Greene County in 1716. Around the outside of the seal is written "COUNTY OF GREENE VIRGINIA" and the year "1838," the year the county was formed from neighboring Orange County. Greene County is named for American Revolutionary patriot Nathanael Greene.

Variant of the flag

Greene County is right next door to my home county of Madison, and I've seen this flag flying in several places throughout the county. The flag is white with a green diagonal bar stretching from the upper left to the lower right. In the canton is the county seal. The diagonal bar and the seal are two different shades of green, but I've never found out why.

I recently discovered that the said design was apparently an unofficial variant of the official flag of the county.
