The city will dedicate its own newly designer city flag in a ceremony Sunday (Dec 21, 1986) at 2 p.m. at the City Hall.
"Tye has never has a (city) flag since it was incorporated in 1957," said Mayor Violet Law. Two Tye police officers will raise the flag Sunday, she said, and the city will host a reception following the flag dedication. The City Council which sponsored the contest, offered a $50 award for the best design, she said.
The Tye Senior Citizens chose David Copeland's design from 109 entries, Law said. Copeland was awarded the $50 prize for his efforts. Mildred Isom, a Tye Resident, made one brocaded version of Copeland's design, which will be displayed in the City Hall after Sunday's dedication ceremony. A flag-making company made a double brocaded version Copeland's design for parades, Law said, and Isom will make another flag for city use.
In Copeland's design, she said, the shape of Texas is superimposed over the tri-color Texas flag. The colors of the Texas image reflect the state's different landscapes, she said. The image's eastern part is green to represent East Texas' piney woods, the western part is sandy brown for West Texas deserts and the central part is brown for Texas heartland's farms. The Tye logo, which lies inside the Texas image, includes a picture of Interstate 20 and a railroad tract intersecting. The city's motto, Law said, is "The crossroads of Texas."
