Description of the Flag

Posted on eBay, no. 200252682861 (end 13 Sep 2008) put up by 'edwinart': vintage Millville (NJ) flag, dimensions given as approx. 24 in x 36 in, 'made of 100% cotton bunting by Annin/Defiance'.

'This and other flags were given to a flag museum which in time sold out the collection in the early 80s to the Heritage Society, I was told' wrote 'edwinart'.

Blue flag with seal in the centre, white text above and below seal. Above: MILLVILLE (large) / NEW JERSEY (smaller), below: THE HOLLY CITY (rather large); no serifs. The seal is white bearing a design in blue: from stylized clouds descends a four-pointed star from which scales of justice hang. Furthermore the seal, surrounded by a holly garland which is tied by a green ribbon, is placed on a white disk. Below said disk a ribbon with blue letters proclaims CHARTERED FEB. 26.1866.

I have not found out how the current flag looks like (if there is a new one), only the 'city logo' featuring two sprigs of holly: /www.ci.millville.nj.us/counties/cumberland/0610

It seems the nickname 'Holly City' was adopted after Dan Fenton, a local horticulturist, started growing holly and developing cultivars there in the nineteen fifties: sierraactivist.org/print.php?sid=43780
