About the Unified Government:
"Kansas City, Kansas is the third largest city in the state of Kansas and is the county seat of Wyandotte County. The city was incorporated in 1886 and for 73 years was governed by a three-member elected Board of Commissioners. In August of 1982, the city held and election and voters approved a change in the form of city government. Under the Charter Ordinance No. 84 the city changed to a seven-member, Mayor- Council-Administrator for of government in April, 1983.

In 1997, voters unanimously approved to consolidate the city and county governments into one jurisdiction. The county of Wyandotte – also affectionately known as "The Dot" - is also home to the cities of Bonner Springs and Edwardsville. Today, nearly 158,000 people call this community home. While we'll never forget our historic past, our future promises to be even more exciting. We're home to historic sites, restaurants, shopping, sports and one-of-a-kind attractions. Over the past several years, Kansas City, Kansas and Wyandotte County have gradually transitioned to a major shopping destination and tourist attraction venue." - from: www.wycokck.org/Dept.aspx?id=16384&menu_id=1358&banner=15284&ekmensel=1358_submenu_0_link_1.
