It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Azure with base wavy of Argent and Vert, issuant from base a boat Argent garnished Gules and Azure, chief Argent charged with a goshawk Proper, holding a quina, a blue shield charged with five bezants in quincunx, a 5-point star radiant Or flanked by two heraldic fountains. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "LUZ - SANTA CRUZ DA GRACIOSA".
The star is an attribute of Our Lady of the Light, the local patron saint. The goshawk is a local symbol of the Azores. The green bar wavy is representing the Atlantic.

Luz Commune is one of the four communes of the Santa Cruz da Graciosa municipality (q.v.); it had 682 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 11.7 km².
