Introduction

There are proposal for eight states to form the republic. These are: Khasan, Tharuwan, Magart, Tamuwan, Tamang, Newa, Kirat and Madhesh. The last one has several movements demanding everything from the far-reaching autonomy to outright independence. The region of Madhesh is also known as Terai and has more affinity with India than with the rest of Nepal (with Mithili (Maithili) people of Bihar), and there is much animosity toward the hills inhabiting Nepalis (Pahadi).
