Echt-Susteren municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 32.107; area: 103,47 km². Settlements: Echt (seat), Aasterberg, Baakhoven, Berkelaar, Dieteren, Echterbosch, Gebroek, Heide, Hingen, Illikhoven, Kokkelert, Koningsbosch, Maria Hoop, Nieuwstadt, Oevereind, Ophoven, Oud-Roosteren, Peij, Roosteren, Schilberg, Sint Joost, Slek, Susteren, Visserweert.
Echt-Susteren was formed on 1 Jan 2003 by the merger of the municipalities of Echt and Susteren.

The flag of Echt-Susteren is at the municipality's homepage, where it is mentioned as having been introduced during the New Years reception of 2 Jan 2005, after having been adopted by the municipal council on 11 Nov 2004.
It is a combination of elements from the flags of the former municipalities, which form the new municipality since 1 Jan 2003: the white saltire and the yellow cross crosslet on red of Echt, and the blue lozenges on white (reversed colors) of Susteren.

Echt is in middle Limburg, between Roermond and Sittard. There was brick- and tile-manufacturing, and of course asparagus was grown here.
The flag is derived from the Coat of Arms, where there are 12 crosses for the 12 villages (parishes) of the municipality. Flag adopted 23 Jun 1983; design: R.J.P.M. Vroomen.
