Mildam = middle dam (in the Tjonger); its church dates from 1726 and
has a bell-cage. In the region Mildamsters are known for "Mildaamster
hier" very bright-blond hair, or "wyt hier" white hair.
Nicknames: "Blêddefeijers" - leaf-wipers; along the old
road, the Schoterlandseweg from Heerenveen to Donkerbroek, there were a
lot of trees with a lot of leaves, and the Mildaamsters had the sorry duty
to wipe them away (just like the inhabitants of the Belgian village of
Bouwel in the municipality of Grobbendonk,
who used the leaves in the stables, the Bouwelers were known as "Bladerendabbers").
Mildaamsters were also known as "Molkenbakken" - biscuits with
sugared milk.
