In 1550, he succeeded to his father's estate, and inherited the governorships of Bungo, Higo, and Chikugo provinces. After that, he converted to Christianity and sent a delegation of boys to Rome. In 1578 he fought against the Shimazu clan and was severely defeated. The war banner has white background with blue Kamon of Gyoyo literally meaning apricot leaves and originally a herness fitting but later changed to a flower shape.
