In 1586, he succeeded his father's estate and became the lord of Hinoyama Castle in Aki Province. He served Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and in 1591, out of 1,120,000 koku of Mouri's territory, he was given three counties in Hoki Province, 110,000 goku around Tsukiyama-Tomita Castle in Izumo Province, and Oki Province. He participated in the Battle of Sekigahara on the side of Toyotomi, but was betrayed to Ieyasu. After the war, he was given Iwakuni Castle in Suo Province.
