Presentation of Generalski Stol

The municipality of Generalski Stol (3,199 inhabitants in 2001, 650 in the village of Generalski Stol) is located some 20 km south-west of Karlovac, on river Mrežnica.
The unusual name of the place was given in the 17th century when it was the seat of the headquarters of the General commanding the Military Border, Vuk Krsto Frankopan (ca. 1588-1652), the father of much more known Fran Krsto Frankopan, in his campaigns defending from the Turks. The previously recorded name of theplace was Lipovac, derived from the word lipa meaning "a linden", which is reflected in the coat of arms.

In the village of Sarovo on the banks of river Dobra, more than 90% (and now even full 100%) of the population is surnamed Škot (meaning, of course, a Scot, a Scotsman). It is not known how this surname came to be. An article from the local newspapers about this was recently sent by a local counciller to the British Embassy in Zagreb, and, surprisigly, this resulted in presenting a Scottish flag from the Embassy. Eventually, on occasions of the birdthday of Queen Elizabeth II and the day of the Municipality of Generalski Stol, the Scotch flag was hoisted in Sarovo next to the Croatian flag.
