The flag of Shirvan, an historical region of eatern Caucasus, is shown on the map designed in the 15th century by the Georgian geographer Vakhushti Bagrationi (aka Prince Vakhushti of Kartli). The map was reprinted in Irakli Matureli's The cartographic heritage of Vakhushti Bagrationi (Tbilisi, 1990). The cartographer wrote შირვანისა (in old Georgian, "shirvanisa", "of Shirvan") above the flag.

The Republic of Batumi was then created in and survived until 1920, when it was occupied by the Georgians.
Its flag was seen again in 1992 during popular demonstrations.
