The town of Kareli (c. 7,200 inhabitants in 2002) is located in Shida Kartli, located on the right bank of river Mtkvari (Kura), 100 km west of Tbilisi. The town's environs are a home to several architectural monuments of medieval Georgia such as the churches of Zghuderi, Samtsevrisi, Ruisi, and Kintsvisi, and the fortress of Ortubani (Dzama).
Kareli was first mentioned, as a village owned by the Tsitsishvili noble family, in documents dated 1715. Kareli was granted the status of a town under the Soviet government in 1981.
