Presentation of Turenne

The most famous member of Turenne family was Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne, Viscount of Turenne (1611-1675). He commanded the army of Germany during the Thirty Years' War, was appointed Lieutenant-General in 1642 and Marshal of France in 1643. His victories in the battles of Arras (1654) and the Dunes (1658) forced Philip IV of Spain to sign the Treaty of Pyrénées (1659), and Turenne was appointed maréchal général des camps et armées du roi by Louis XIV. He commanded the French army during the wars of Devolution (1667) and Holland (1672), and conquered Alsace after the victory of Turckheim (5 January 1675). He died on the battlefield of Salzbach (27 July 1675).
