Presentation of El Atazar

The municipality of El Atazar (98 inhabitants in 2014; 2,955 ha; municipal website) is located in the north-west of the Community of Madrid, on the border with Castilla-La Mancha (Province of Guadalajara), 65 km of Madrid.

El Atazar might have originally been a Moorish camp, reconquerred in 1083 by Alfonso VI, together with the town of Buitrago del Lozoya. The village was mentioned, as Latazar, in Alfonso XI's Libro de la Montería, but the origin and meaning of the name of the village are unknown. On 20 April 1490, Iñigo López de Mendoza granted the municipal status to El Atazar, Puebla de la Sierra and La Hiruela.
