Introduction

The organisation was a local water rescue organisation, operated by local water sports clubs an established on 27 April 1899 in Berlin on occasion of an accident on Good Friday 1899, where a few young people drowned in the Mügggelsee.
In 1930 a rescue station was established in Grünau and since then there had been regular lake patrols, in 1935 the swimming rescue station SEDDIN was established on the shore of the Seddinsee. In 1936 five boats operated from the Grünau Base and among other gave supervision of regattas of the Olympic Games 1936. At the end of WW2 the organisation was dissolved, but already in 1946 members organised the rescue service from a new base in Schmöckwitz more or less on their own, giving themselves the name "Deutscher Wasser Rettungs Dienst", which preceded the symbols of the water rescue service of DRK in the DDR. After the German Red Cross of the GDR had been established in 1952, the organisation was replaced by the Water Rescue Service of the DRK and after German reunification by Water Rescue Service of the Workers-Samaritans-Federation (ASB).

RWBU Flag

The flag was white with a red cross patty in centre and black initials in the corners: "R" (upper hoist), "W" (upper fly), "B" (lower hoist) and "U" (lower fly). The cross was probably inspired from that one of Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRS), which had been established in 1865 in Kiel.
