In 1861 in Berlin existed 33 athletics clubs for men and six for boys. Most of them belonged to Berliner Turnrath or Turngemeinde in Berlin.
Attempts to unite them to one big club failed however.
In 1863 thirteen of the biggest clubs left the Berliner Turnrath and established Berliner Turnerschaft on 16 May 1863. 800 members joined the new club.
First they exercised in their proper clubs and locations. A bit later the clubs were transformed to numbered bases.
In 1893 the first females were allowed to join the club.
Currently the club has departments for athletics, gymnastics, swimming, handball, volleyball, fistball, unihockey, dancing and rowing.
