Meaning:
There existed a local fortress, which was owned by the consort of the King of Böhmen in 1174. Since the middle of the 12th century the Lordship of Meerane developed, which was acquired by the Lords of Schönburg around 1300 and was untied with the Lordship of Glauchau during the 15th century. Beneath the fortress a settlement developed since the 12th century, which was mentioned as a small city in 1405. Weaving and textiles industries had been the main business lines since the 16th century. The inescutcheon in the city arms displays the family arms of their rulers. The building is alluding to the former city walls and its nine towers, which were destroyed during the Hussite War in 1429.
