Neustadt Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a castle Or with embattled wall and two embattled towers with windows Azure, between the towers an impending inescutcheon Or charged with two branches raguly Sable in saltire.
Meaning:
Neustadt (= new town) was founded shortly after 1300 based on two former villages. It was mentioned as a city first in 1333 as part of the Lordship of Hohnstein. Main purpose of the new entity had been gold mining, probably established by miners from Freiberg. Mayor and council existed since 1423. In 1451 it was acquired by the Electorate of Sachsen. Since the 16th century linen weaving became the most important business line. The inescutcheon displays the family arms of the Berka kin from Dubá, who owned the lordship in the 14th century. The castle is symbolising the status of a city. The pattern was first displayed on a city seal with a circumscription "SIGILLVM CIVITATIS NOVAE" (= seal of the new city) and an additonal date "1590". It remained basically the same, but the tincture of the castle had benn silver before.
