In the middle of the 14th century the market town gained city rights, granted by the Kings of Böhmen. The first city seal displayed the Bohemian lion on the inescutcheon. He was replaced by the lozenges of the Wittelsbach kin in 1373 and in 1505 by the lesser arms of the Free Imperial City of Nürnberg. The tinctures remained the same since 1555. Lauf is the seat of Nürnberger Land County.
