Municipality

The municipality of Planalto Alegre (2,659 inhabitants in 2010; 6,263 ha) is located 600 km west of Florianópolis.

Planalto Alegre was named for its geographical location on a highland ("planalto") and for its hospitable and relax people ("alegre", "happy").
The district of Planalto Alegre was established by Municipal Law No. 69 promulgated on 15 February 1967, to be elevated a municipality by State Law No. 4,138 promulgated on 12 December 1991, which was inaugurated on 1 January 1993.

Description of the Flag

The flag and arms of Planalto Alegre are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 40 promulgated on 17 September 1993.

Article 2.
The municipal coat of arms shall have the following characteristics.
I - Beneath the shield a decorative pointed red stripe with black writing "12/12 - 1991" in the stripe's points, recalling the date of emancipation of the municipality. In the center, the name of the municipality and of the state, also in black letters, "PLANALTO ALEGRE - SC".
II - The shield's external sides with, right, a maize plant surmounted by a bean plant, left, a soybean plant with ripe pods surmounted by a branch with two ripe oranges, symbolizing agriculture and citriculture in Planalto Grande.
III - The shield subdivided horizontally in two fields. In the lower field, a bovine and a pig, representing cattle-breeding in the municipality, the bovine being a milk cow. Also two poultry birds, turkey and chicken, representing aviculture in the municipality. In the upper field, in perspective view, trees and Brazilian pines, characterizing reforestation and preservation of the natural environment. On the horizon, a sun with yellow rays irradiating the advent of a new municipality.
IV - Above the shield a red crown symbolizing force, courage and leadership of the people of Planalto Alegre, including three gates, union, commitment and equality.

Article 3.
The flag of the municipality of Planalto Alegre is composed of three colors, red, green and white, from the municipal coat of arms.
I - Red forms two horizontal stripes, each covering 35% of the flag, representing courage, valiance and self-confidence.
II - Green forms an horizontal stripe placed between the red stripes, covering 30% of the flag, representing the natural environment composed of fields, reforested areas, rainforests and agricultural land.
III - White forms a lozenge partially superimposed to the red and green parts, whose main dimension between angles, horizontal, covers 73% of the flag's length. The lozenge's width, covering 61% of the flag's width, represents peace and purity. The white lozenge is inscribed with the coat of arms.
