Municipality

The municipality of Pinheirinho do Vale (4,871 inhabitants in 2019; 10,539 ha) is located on the border with Santa Catarina state, 450 km north-east of Porto Alegre.

Pinheirinho do Vale was settled around 1920 by German, Italian and Portuguese colonists coming from the old colonies in Montenegro, Lajeado, Feliz, Santa Cruz, Venâncio Aires, Guaporé and Taquari.
On 24 January 1925, Pinheirino do Vale was the place of a bloody fighting involving the Prestes Column. Lieutenant Mário Portela Fagundes and the men constituting the rear-guard were killed.
The town is named for an isolated Brazilian pine ("pinheiro"), which was used as a landmark for crossing river Uruguai.

The district of Pinheirinho was established, within the municipality of Frederico Westphalen, by Municipal Law No. 195 promulgated on 15 May 1958, separating from the district of Caiçara. Pinheirinho was transferred to the municipality of Palmitinho, established by State Law No. 5,087 promulgated on 8 November 1965.
The municipality of Pinheirinho do Vale was established by State Law No. 9,586 promulgated on 20 March 1992 and inaugurated on 1 January 1993.
