The coat of arms is prescribed by Decision Odluka o osvajanju Grba grada Kaknja (text), adopted on 30 August 1996 by the transitional Municipal Assembly and published in the Municipal official gazette Službeni galsnik Općine Kakanj.

The coat of arms is in the shape of a black stećak, a kind of medieval funerary monuments found in the region. The white fleur-de-lis ornament in the base is also from the same source. The black field contains a white mining shaft with a blue base with four white wavy lines topped with a red crenellation and a green roof.
While the coat of arms is often shown with its outer shape coloured dark gray, the Decision is clear that it should be black, and it is indeed shown as black in some occasions.
