The Sierra Club is an American environmental organization with chapters in
all 50 U.S. states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. The club was founded on
May 28, 1892, in San Francisco, California, by Scottish-American
preservationist John Muir, who became the first president as well as the
longest-serving president, at approximately 20 years in this leadership
position. The Sierra Club operates only in the United States and holds the
legal status of 501(c)(4) nonprofit social welfare organization.
The
Sierra Club's first members were originally focused on the conservation of
California's Sierra Nevada
mountains. Since then, the Sierra Club has evolved into an organization that
works to advance climate solutions and ensure everyone has access to clean
air, clean water, and a healthy environment.

The 1998-2014 logo: at its July
1998 meeting, the Board adopted a new logo designed by John Bielenberg. It
depicts a giant sequoia and Half Dome with a mountain peak in the background
and has an elliptical border. The words "Sierra Club" and "Founded 1892" are
underneath in Trajan type.
