North Hampton raises new town flag
By Max Sullivan Posted Jun 17, 2019
The town’s new flag was raised in a ceremony at the North Hampton town
campus Monday, officials praising the local teen who came up with its design.
“It’s been a long process,” said 17-year-old Max Reich, who has been working on
the new flag since early 2018. It took work with town officials and a Town
Meeting vote this year to get approval for the flag, which was raised by
firefighter Maryssa Goodrich at 1 p.m. Monday.
The flag will be placed on
other poles in town as well, according to Town Administrator Bryan Kaenrath.
Residents voted 842-194 to adopt the flag at the 2019 Town Meeting in March.
Select Board member Kathleen Kilgore said the new flag marked a “special day”
for the town. “We’re here to raise a flag and say thank you to Max Reich, who is
the inspiration and the drive for getting this new flag for our town,” said
Kilgore.
Reich grew up with a fascination with flags, which prompted him
to design a new one for his hometown. He worked with the Select Board and the
Heritage Commission on the design, and he sees the flag as a way to honor and
learn about the town’s history. Select Board member Larry Miller said the flag
has an interesting design, which keeps the town seal in the center of the flag
on a field of blue to represent the waters that surround North Hampton. The tan
stripes on either side symbolize its sandy shores and land mass. The 13 stars
around the seal represent the fact that New Hampshire was one of the original 13
Colonies that founded this nation. The white bands represent peace, purity and
beauty of North Hampton, according to Reich.
