According to an article published by The Miami Herald on March 8th, 1987,
the City of North Miami does have a predecessor to its current flag. Its
colors, adoption date, and designer are all unknown.
Former North Miami
mayor Howard Neu said: "Nobody knows exactly how it got that way, but there was
some symbolism there. There was a time when we were talking about getting a new
city flag, but for some reason, it died."
The flag contained 3 stripes,
with the middle stripe wider than the top and bottom. A silhouette of the sun
and a palm tree were placed in the middle, with the old city seal and an
abstract representation of two trees in a disk were placed on either side of
the sun symbol. On the top stripe were the words "NORTH MIAMI" arched above the
word "FLORIDA", while on the bottom stripe were the words "CITY OF PROGRESS"
 curved beneath.
