Approved by the royal resolution of 23 August 1985 after a drawing by Hans H. Holm, redrawn by Ola T. Rybakken. [c2j87]
The municipal web site explains the reindeer symbolic simply "it comes from the central position reindeer have had in Vågå, both through herding and hunt."
The graphic profile provides for graphic standards for the coat of arms, but mentions flags only in passing - however, showing a number of ornamental flags and table flags...
The Heraldry of the World provides another explanation, similar to what [c2j87] has: the design background is the "The buck-ride" over Gjendineggen from Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" (Act 1, Scene 1, Gjendineggen is Ibsen's name for Besseggen, a mountain ridge between two lakes, and today a most popular and picturesque hiking route in Norway). In turn, Ibsen got the idea of reindeer ride from a local legend of Gudbrand Glesne, he found in Asbjørnsen's "Høifjeldbilleder".
