The Alliance for Democracy (AD) was formed on 09h of September 1998 as an umbrella body of 18 southern Nigeria-based organisations under the auspices of the Southern Leaders Forum (SLF) and two essentially Northern Nigerian based political structures – the United Democratic Congress (UDC) and the United Party for National Salvation (UPNS). Since its formation the AD has been promoting pro-democracy and civil society credentials and its affinity with the broad democratic, civil and national struggles of ordinary Nigerians which has positioned the party as a national democratic movement.
The AD was formed based on the ideology and principles of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba social political and economic organisation.
In conjunction with NADECO, a militant pro-democracy group, the AD fought the
military government of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Sanni Abacha and ensured the
establishment of democracy in the country.  Even though AD won two
senate seats in the south-east and south-south, two
houses of Representative seats in the two zones; six council chairmanship
seats in the two zones members of state House of Assemblies in
	Ebonyi,
    Kaduna, Katsina,
	Bauchi, Yobe and
	Gombe states and over hundred
councillorship seats in the five zones outside the South-West, the party was
and is still being essentially seen as a regional political outfit on the
strength of its massive showing in the south-west.

The flag of the Alliance for Democracy has a white
diagonal stripe in the centre, with a green stripe at the hoist and a red
stripe in the fly.  In the centre of the white stripe is the emblem of
the party in black which is black five-pointed star within a black ring and
the letters AD in white across the star.
