Coat of Arms

from guanajuato.gob.mx

The coat of arms was designed and painted by Manuel "Meme" Lara from Tarimoro, being sent to Guanajuato City on 1 October 1952; this was done in preparation for the bicentenary of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla's birth from a few months before the anniversary of the capture of Alhóndiga de Granaditas in 1953. Governor José Aguilar y Maya asked the states and the municipalities of Guanajuato to send their own coat of arms to an exhibition at the event. For this, Municipal President Belén Ramírez Martínez asked the painter to design the coat of arms.

As a background simulating a parchment, a tule petate is seen as the principal source of work of Villagrán at the time of its adoption. In the center of the petate, a shield is divided into three sections. Going around the shield is the motto "Pueblo - humilde - y - Laborioso" [Humble and Hardworking Town]. The upper section depicts two angels crowning the Virgin Mary; recognizing that the patron saint of the Municipality is the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The lower-left section depicts a lagoon where a gourd is used to extract from it, where a mountain, pig, and cow are seen for its fauna. The lower-right section depicts an ear of wheat and cob of corn, representing the agricultural production of the region.
