According to Wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalkara, "kalkara" means "kiln" in Maltese,
making this coat of arms and its banner of arms yet another example of canting
arms and flag.
 António Martins-Tuválkin, 15 January 2007
More precisely, a "kalkara" must be a lime kiln. In Latin, lime is called "calx,
calcis", which gave in French the roots calc-, calci-, calcio- and calco-, used
in several lime-related words such as "chaux" (lime), "calcaire" (limestone),
"calcium", "calciner" (to calcine) and other scientific words. The root was
transferred as calci- etc. in Spanish and English and as kalk- in German and
Dutch (and therefore probably in several other languages, including Maltese).

Kindly be informed that the logo and flag for Il-Kalkara has changed as from 2009.
The new logo shows the flame erupting from the line joining the yellow and blue
fields and the addition of a green bordure.
