The name `Taihaku` originates from the Mt. Taihaku, the legendary mountain that
Venus became when she fell. Nagamachi, the center of the western part of the

is the source of the Natori River, which runs through the ward. The district
also has surrounding mountains with beautiful natural formations, such as the
Banzi Cliff and the Akiu Water Fall. Folk dancing to pray for a good harvest
during the rice-planting season is a cultural tradition that has been handed

Since long ago, `Miyagino` has been highly praised and written about in famous

estates and land adjustment. Transport and warehousing companies have a large
presence in the Hinodemachi, Ogimachi and Nigatake areas because of the easy
accessibility to the highways. These companies, in addition to the large
factories located around Sendai Port, represent the main industries of the city.

The Nanakita River runs through the center of the ward from Mt. Izumigatake to
the east. During the Edo Period, Izumi prospered as the lodging town located on
the Oshu Highway. On the hills around the town, many temples and historical
sites remain. Old traditions and heritages, such as the Deer Dance from the
Fukuoka area, have been handed down through the generations. Since the 1960's,
Izumi has had a rapidly growing residential area. Through city planning, Izumi
continues to develop as the northern sub-central part of Sendai. Accumulation of
a frontier industry is achived as a position to which new development of the
city industry is led, and the northern part area also aims at accumulation of a
research-and development function or a new industry creation support function.
The ward symbol mark was adopted in Feb 2007 but no flag law.
