GREPALMA was established in 2008 by palm growers.
Oil palm cultivation was 
initiated in Guatemala in 1965, as a potential substitute to coffee. In the 
1980s, the cotton crisis and the need to maintain a national production of plant 
oil prompted the establishment of plantations of oil palms in La Gomera, 
Escuintla and San Marcos. In the late 1990S, palms were planted in Izabal and 
Petén on plots originally dedicated to cattle-breeding. Oil palms are now 
cultivated in three main areas:
- South: San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, 
Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez and Escuintla:
- North-east: Izabal and Alta 
Verapaz, especially in the valleys of Motagua and Polochic;
- North; Petén 
south, Alta Verapaz north and Quiché north-east.
The yield of crude palm oil 
in Guatemala is 6.2 ton per hectare, much higher than the world's average, 3.5 
ton per hectare.
