20 September 2009Newnham College of Cambridge University (Great Britain) presenting itself at

“Newnham is one of the 31
colleges of the University of Cambridge (...). We have 400 undergraduates, 150
postgraduates, and about 70 academic staff. (...) The College was established in
1871 as a house in which young women could reside while attending lectures in
Cambridge. Newnham is still a women's college, and the only undergraduate
college with an all-women Fellowship.”
In 1948 Newnham took its place
among the other colleges of Cambridge. This page concerns the arms, granted in
1923:
http://www.internal.newn.cam.ac.uk/about/about_arms.shtml: “Argent, on a
chevron azure between in chief two crosses botonny fitchy and in base a mullet
sable, a griffin's head erased or between two mascles of the field.”
These are composite arms incorporating elements of Balfour, Kennedy, Clough, and
Sidgwick. The designer, E.E. Dorling, left out a helmet and crest as these were
judged inappropriate for women.
