About the Flag

The town of Thorpe St Andrew (13,762 inhabitants in 2001; 9 ha) is located two miles to the east of the centre of Norwich. Thorpe St Andrew is the capital of the Broadland District. The name of the town betrays its remote Anglo-Saxon origin; the Middle English word "thorp", cognate with the German word "torp" / "dorf", means "a hamlet", "a small village".

In "Norwich Evening News", 28 August 2011, Annabelle Dickson presents the new flag of Thorpe St Andrew, officially unveiled on 27 August 2011. The flag, designed and made by local company Gowise Print, is in proportions 1:2, blue with the two shields of the town. Below the shields is a white scroll charged with the Latin motto of the town, "OPPIDUM PROPE FLUVIUM" (The fortified camp by the river), written in black letters. "THORPE ST ANDREW TOWN COUNCIL" is written in yellow letters along the bottom of the flag. The shields, each surrounded by a dark golden border, are, left, "Azure a saltire argent", right, "Argent St. Andrew proper holding his cross".
