The municipality of Llanos del Caudillo (719 inhabitants in 2018; 2,045 ha) is located 60 km north-east of Ciudad Real.
Llanos del Caudillo was established in 1953 by the Instituto Nacional de
Colonización.
In 2004, 70% of the inhabitants voted against the suppression of "del
Caudillo", a straightforward reference to Francisco Franco, from the
municipality's name. On 28 April 2016, the lawyer Eduardo Ranz required
11 Spanish municipalities to drop reference to Franco or his dignitaries
from their names, claiming this was a violation of the Law on Historical
Memory.
The Court of Ciudad Real allowed in June 2016 Llanos del Caudillo to
keep its complete name.
