Pedro Vicente Maldonado canton (65,650 ha) is located in the north-west of
Pichincha province, on the borders with Imbabura and Santo Domingo de los
Tsáchilas provinces.
The settlement of Pedro Vicente Maldonado was
established on 29 September 1972, as part of the newly formed parish of San
Miguel de los Bancos. On 30 August 1978, Pedro Vicente Maldonado was erected the
36th parish of Quito canton.
A committee for the erection of Pedro Vicente
Maldonado was set up in 1987 by Hugo Pérez. This was obtained by a Law passed on
20 January 1992 and published on 28 January 1992 in the Supplement to the
Ecuadorian official gazette, No. 862.

The canton's namesake is the scientist Pedro Vicente Maldonado (1704-1748),
member of the French-Spanish Geodesic Mission (1736-1737).

The flag of Pedro Vicente Maldonado is horizontally divided white-green.
The most likely explanation of the origin of the canton flag is supported by
sports managers (Benjamín Peralvo and Humberto Chuquín) and sportsmen (José
Molina, Marcelo Vallejo and Darwin Zavala, among others) of the time.
In
1978, the Association of Rural Leagues of Quito Canton invited the newly created
parish of Pedro Vicente Maldonado to enter the football Inter-parish
Championship, held in Guayllabamba.
The club equipment was hastily designed
during the night preceding the competition: white jerseys and green trunks. The
team was required to march behind the parish flag during the opening ceremony;
accordingly, a flag was sewn in a hurry on the model of the club's colors.
