The parish of La Peaña, located in Pasaje canton (El Oro province), was
established by Agreement No. 518 of 30 November 1956.

The flag of La Peaña is vertically divided green-red-yellow. The green stripe
represents the fertility and agricultural productivity of the soil. The
parish grows several native trees, today in hazard of extinction, and
crops such as coffee, bananas and cocoa. The red stripe represents valiance,
force, and courage. It also represents the sacrifice of people for the sake of
progress, including, when needed, the offer of their life to protect their
sacred interests. The yellow stripe means the splendour of the fields and the
maturity of crops. It represents the historical heritage left by the previous
generations.

The process of adoption of the symbols of La Peaña was initiated on 19 June 2006
in a meeting attended by the Parish Council, representatives of the educational
institutes, and of the boroughs, and various other officials of the parish. A
commission was set up to supervize the creation of the symbols. After several
meetings, the commission presented on 11 September 2006 the selected symbols,
which were eventually adopted on 30 November 2006 by the Parish Council, during
the solemn celebration of the 50th anniversary of the erection of the parish.
