Espíndola canton (51,422 ha) is located in the south of Loja Province, on 
the border with Peru, here, river Espíndola.
The canton was established by 
Supreme Decree No. 95, acted on 21 January 1971 and published on 27 January 1971 
in the official gazette No. 150.

The flag and arms of Espíndola are prescribed by a Municipal Resolution 
adopted on 18 November 1971.
Article 1.
The flag is composed with 
harmony, using the colors of the coat of arms.
Article 2. Colors.
Yellow: Symbol of splendor and the sun.
Blue: Symbol of loyalty, sky, beauty, 
truth like the river's water and the sky clearness.
Green: Symbol of hope, 
vegetation, clearly indicating the crops produced by the rich soil: sugar cane, 
coffee, pastures etc, which constitute a source of income.
Two Greek symbols 
at the beginning and end of the homeland, Alpha and Omega, located at each end 
of the green stripe.
Article 3. Proportions
The flag shall have the 
following dimensions, in compliance with the laws of heraldry.
Article 4.
The flag shall be divided into four equal parts, the 3/4 corresponding to the 
two outer yellow stripes and the green central stripes and the last fourth 
corresponding to the two blue stripes adjacent to the green stripe, which 
represents the rivers bordering the wide fields of Espíndola.
Article 5.
The flag of Espíndola shall be hoisted only on the canton's commemorative days, 
especially the anniversary of its establishment.
