Or, an Oak-tree eradicated Brunatre leaved and fructed proper.
Željko Heimer/Christopher Southworth
The name "Echallens" comes from "Charlens"
which appeared for the first time in 1141 on a bull of Pope Innocent II
confirming the spiritual belonging of the village to the Abbey of Montbenoit
in Franche-Comte (France). The orthography "Echallens" finds its
origin in the 14th century, but the reason of the name's change is unknown.
