I believe the second most sold flag in Brazil is C.R. Flamengo flag, our most
popular soccer club.
Pablo Duarte, 15 March 1997
The photograph of the club president at the official club website
shows him standing between the Brazilian flag and the flag shown above as the
official club flag. Elsewhere on the web I have seen the flag sent by Alexandre
for sale as "bandeira torcedor," or "fan flag."

At
the club website they say the eight stars on the flag stand for the
Championship won by the club in 1945, the two South American Championships in 1948
and 1998, the Mercosul/Mercosur Championship in 2000, and the four Brazilian
Championships in 1974, 1989, 1997 and 2000. Note that the name is "Club"
and not the expected "Clube" in Portuguese.
Francisco Santos, 26 May 2003
Vasco da Gama was a famous Portuguese navigator.

Many Brazilian football clubs are named some variant of "clube de regatas," or regatta club. This is because the clubs began as rowing clubs and only later took up football. That is also why the flags of Flamengo and Corinthians have crossed oars as part of their badges.
