The municipality of Ouro Verde (2,254 inhabitants in 2010; 18,922 ha) is located 550 km west of Florianópolis.
Ouro Verde (Green Gold), formerly known as Anta Gorda (Big Tapir), is named
for the region's natural resources, Brazilian pine and yerba mate.
Mostly
colonized in the 1940s by farmers coming from Rio Grande do Sul and the valley
of Fish River, Ouro Verde was established as a municipality by State Law No.
8,529 promulgated on 9 January 1992.
