The municipality of Nova Trento (14,549 inhabitants in 2019; 40,212 ha) is
located 80 km west of Florianópolis.
Nova Trento was established in 1875
by Italian immigrants coming from Trentino. The district of Nova Trento was
established by Provincial Law No. 1,074 promulgated on 4 April 1884, to be
elevated a municipality on 8 August 1892.
Among the early immigrants was
Amábile Lúcia Visinteiner (1865-1942), born in the village of Vigolo Vattaro,
who settled with her family in the (new) village of Vigolo, part of Nova Trento.
On 12 July 1860, she founded, with her friend Virginia Rosa Nicolodi, the
Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. They were
joined the next year by Teresa Anna Maule. The three founders moved in 1894 to
the town of Nova Trento, in a house offerred by benefactors João Valle and
Francisco Sgrott. On 7 December 1895, Amábile took the coat as Paulina do
Coração Agonizante de Jesus.
Elected in 1903 Superior General of the
congregation, Mother Paulina was sent in 1909 to Bragança Paulista by the
ecclesiastic authorities. Nine years later, she retired in the congregation's
headquarters in São Paulo. The congregation was canonically approved on 19 May
1933 by Pöpe Pius XI.
Mother Paulina was blessed in Florianópolis on 18
October 1991 by Pope John Paul II and canonized on 19 May 2002 in Rome. To
welcome the ever increasing number of pilgrims, the congregation erected a
sanctuary in Nova Trento, which was consecrated on 22 January 2006.

The mural crown symbolizes the Italian duchy
at the time of immigration.
The upper blue field represents the sky; the sun
represents wealth and liberty and the new horizons desired by the immigrants who
settled in Novo Trento.
The red quarter represents the martyred of the patron
saint, St. Vigilius, and the immigrants' courage. The crosier represents the
Bishopric of Trento (Italy), whose patron saint is St. Vigilius; yellow is the
color symbolizing faith in the immigrants' homeland and the formation of the
colony. The bunch of grapes inserted in the crosier represents wine-growing,
present in the municipality.
The green quarter represents hope and the
forests. The plow symbolizes agriculture.
The yellow stripe is inscribed with
the name of the municipality and the year of colonization, "1875".

The dimensions of the flag given in the Law do not make
sense. The flag mostly used has equal stripes.
