The municipality of Lajeado Grande (1,490 onhabitants in 2010; 6,593 ha) is
located 550 km west of Florianópolis.
Lajeado Grande, originally known as
Pesquero, was renamed to Lajeado Grande for the numerous flagstones ("lajes")
found on the banks of the river; the name is said to have been coined by early
colonist Luiz Lunardi.
The first settler of the place was Francisco Oliveira
da Silva, aka Chiquinho, who acquired a plot from Lunardi and arrive there in
1918 with his wife and two children.
The district of Lajeado Grande was
established within Xaxim by Resolution No. 376 issued on 12 December 1958.
Antônio Carlos Mattiello initiated on 20 July 1991 the process of municipal
emancipation, which was granted by State Law No. 8,478 promulgated on 12
December 1991.
