The flag and arms of Campo Belo do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No.
272 promulgated on 27 March 1974.
Article 6.
The municipal flag of
Campo Belo do Sul, designed by the heraldist Arcinoé Antonio Peixoto de Faria,
shall be horizontally divided in three stripes, the outer stripes green, of 5
units in width and the central white, of 4 units in width, superimposed with a
red stripe of one unit, running from a white isosceles triangle placed along the
hoist and charged with the municipal coat of arms.
§1. In compliance with
the tradition of Portuguese heraldry, and their inherited canons and rules,
municipal flags have to be divided in eight, six, four or three parts, featuring
the same colors as the field of the coat of arms and in the center or at hoist a
geometrical figure inscribing the municipal coat of arms.
§2. The municipal
flag of Campo Belo do Sul obeys this general rule, being divided in three
horizontal stripes. The coat of arms applied on the flag represents the
municipal government while the white isosceles triangle inscribing it represents
the town proper as the municipal seat. White is a symbol of peace, friendship,
work, prosperity, purity and religious feeling. The central white stripe charged
with a red stripe represents the spread of municipal power all over the
territory. Red is a symbol of dedication, patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity,
courage and valiance. The green outer stripe represents the rural estates
scattered over the municipal territory. Green is a symbol of honor, civility,
courtesy, glee, abundance and hope; hope is green since greening fields in
spring promise profuse harvests
Article 7.
In compliance with heraldic
rules, the municipal flag shall have the official dimensions adopted for the
national flag, 14 units in width on 20 units in length.
Article 19.
The coat of arms of Campo Belo do Sul, designed by the heraldist Arcinoé Antonio
Peixoto de Faria, is described as follows:
A Samnit shield surmounted by a
six-towered mural crown argent ports gules. On a field argent an oxen passant
sable surrounded by two stylized Brazilian pines proper issuant from a base
vert. The shield supported dexter and sinister by soybean, wheat and maize
plants proper crossed in base and superimposed by a scroll gules containing in
letters argent the toponym "Campo Belo do Sul" surrounded by the date "03 de
dezembro de 1961".
The coat of arms has the following symbolic
interpretation:
a) The Samnit shield, used to represent the arms of Campo
Belo do Sul, was the first style of shield introduced to Portugal by French
influence, inherited by the Brazilian heraldry to evoke the colonizing race and
main builder of the nation;
b) The mural crown surmounting the shield is the
universal symbol of domain's coat of arms; argent (silver) with six towers, four
visible in perspective view, it classifies the town as of third rank or
municipal seat.
c) Argent (silver) is a symbol of peace, friendship, work,
prosperity, purity and religious feeling.
d) In the shield's center, the oxen
passant sable (black) spotty argent (silver) represents cattle-breeding, one of
the most striking sources of income for the municipality; also the symbol of
farmer's work, patience and constant commitment to work. The Latin etymology of
the word "pecunia" (currency) proves that livestock ("pecus") was the Romans'
first currency. Accordingly, coins minted at the time featured an oxen's effigy.
e) Sable (black) is a symbol of austerity, prudence, moderation, wisdom and
firmness.
f) The base vert (green) represents pastures, the origin of the
toponym Campo Belo do Sul, harboring the stylized Brazilian pines that are
characteristic of the Brazilian southern region.
g) Vert (green) is a symbol
of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, abundance and hope; hope is green since
greening fields in spring promise profuse harvests.
h) The outer ornaments,
soybean, wheat and maize, represent the main products of the generous and
fertile soil, sources of income for the municipality.
i) On a scroll gules
(red), a symbol of dedication, patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage
and valiance, in letters argent (silver) the identifying toponym "Campo Belo do
Sul" surrounded by its date of political emancipation, "03 de dezembro de 1961".
