The coat of arms was adopted on 18 April 1997 by Municipal Law No. 018/97.
The date "21 Dezembro 1995" on the coat of arms recalls that the Periquite, a
district of the municipality of Açucena since 30 December 1962 (State Law No.
2764), became a municipality on 21 December 1995 (State Law No. 12030).
