After a month of invitations to the
community of Puerto San Julián to design the representative flag of the town,
the winning flag was chosen from among nine proposals submitted.
An
evaluation committee, made up of representatives of the local municipality, art,
culture, educational institutions and local representative institutions, by
secret vote, were in charge of choosing the official flag that will represent
Puerto San Julián.
The flag will be officially presented on the
anniversary of Puerto San Julián on September 17, 2018.
The winner was
the proposal presented by Mrs. Analía Coloccini. The reasoning that accompanied
the designed flag explains that the proposal rescues the main colors of the
local shield of Puerto San Julián, symbolizing in yellow the colors of
evangelization and the light blue and white colors that represent us as the
Argentine people.
Furthermore, the flag depicts the world and, on it,
Magellan's route from the old world to new horizons. The flag features a drawing
of the Nao Victoria, escorted by seagulls, and the Christian cross, symbol of
the first mass on Argentine soil.
The rising sun is also represented, a
symbol of the brilliance of a young and thriving society. Towards the upper
right margin, there is the Southern Cross, which symbolizes the course that
guided the navigators who arrived from other parts of the world. The proposal
also has the typical design of a Tehuelche quillango, as a symbol of the culture
of our native peoples. Finally, at the bottom, our sea is represented.
