I contacted the Smyrna city clerk for any information about the adoption of
the city flag, I was given a list of old newspaper articles from the early 90's
by the Marietta Daily Journal. I will label them from the earliest date to the
latest date. I have made a drawing of the flag using a picture clip of the flag
in one of the articles, as well as Google streetview.

Smyrna holds contest for new flag
design

Smyrna has run out
of city flags. But city officials have decided it's time not to reorder, but to
redesign the banner. So, as was done with the current flag, residents and
students all over metro Atlanta are being asked to submit new designs. The flag
was taken down for the last time two months ago by Parks and Recreation employee
Phillip Buruss in memory of a Smyrna fireman who died after a brief illness in
August. When Parks and Recreation director Sherry Reavis saw the tattered
condition of the last flag the city had in stock, she decided not to put it back
up, according to Smyrna community relations director Kathie Barton.
No
one knows who designed the last flag, or even when the contest was held.
"Officially - we don't remember," city clerk Melinda Dameron said. The city has
received only three entries thus far, but Mrs. Barton is expecting more. "They
always come in at the end [of the contest]," she said.
Three judges from
the community will be chosen to pick the winning entry. Most Likely two of the
three judges will come from the Downtown Development Authority and the Smyrna
Business Association, said Mrs. Barton.
There
are no parameters for the entries to encourage creativity, Mrs. Barton said. But
she hopes people will keep in mind the new image she is trying to promote for
the city - a "hometown catching up with what's going on in the metropolitan
area."
The creator of the winning design will receive $100, Entries must
be at City Hall by Oct. 31.

The city of Smyrna will unveil its new flag as part of
the kick of Spring Fest '93, on April 24. The flag, the product of a metro-wide
contest last fall, was designed by Georgia Tech student Shawn McConnell. The
modern design uses seven brilliant colors and depicts Smyrna's progressive
image.
Utilizing the deep-rooted heritage of the jonquil flower, Smyrna's
namesake, the design tilts the flower's trumpet toward and outline of the new
community center - Smyrna's new beginning.
The flag raising ceremony
will take place at 11 a.m., five or take a few minutes. Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon
and city council members will together raise the new flag on the community
center flag pole.
