Martins-Tuválkin and Tomislav Todorovic, 01 Mar 2025In 2015, U.S. vexillologist Scott Mainwaring presented his proposal for
a flag of the dwarf planet Pluto. [mws15e]
It is a black square flag with a large white stylized heart containing
the astrological symbol of Pluto ("⯓") in orange. The
choice of this symbol, instead of the better known Percival Lowell monogram
("♇"), was based on it being "more flag-friendly".
The heart shape refers to the lighter geographic feature of
Tombaugh Regio,
that covers a large part of Pluto’s surface and which had been discovered very recently,
in July 2015 when this flag was devised. The square shape of this flag "distinguishes
it from standard terrestrial flags", which seems to imply that Scott Mainwaring
suggests that flags of other planets should be square, too.
In another article [oov21a],
U.S. vexillologist Michael Orelove states that Scott Mainwaring designed this flag at his
request; photo shows an actual flag in use (approx. one sq. yd.), and public use is reported.
