As noted by [c2j87] with Malvik grouse (Nor. tiur) was intropduced in heraldry, although its cousin - black grouse (Nor. orrhane) was noted already in the Middle Ages.
On http://www.adressa.no/tv/?id=28894 one may hear the mayor explaining the design. In the short film one may prominently see a makeshift flag of Melhus, being an almost square white flag with the coat of arms in the centre covering almost the entire field. However, I am not quite sure that we should really count it?
Among other things, the mayor points out that Malvik wanted to highlight its natural resources and those have chosen a grouse. In 1980 a competition was organized among the citized, producing some 40 proposals. Two of proposals included the grouse. Also, the mayor points out an important difference of the Malvik coat of arms in regarding to the majority of other Norwegian municipal arms - namely it has a semi-circular shield. Something only yet Melhus in Sor-Trondelag has. And indeed, most of the arms to be seen are in a semi-circular shield - even though [c2j87] shows it in a standard heart-shaped shield.
